Every veteran who works at Suffolk has a unique story. Hear in Brent’s words how he got to where he is today.
I was in the Army for 12 years. I deployed to Iraq twice—once with the Army, once as a private security contractor—and Afghanistan once. I completed schools for Army Ranger, Airborne, Air Assault, and Pathfinder, plus Special Forces basic combat training. On active duty, I was a forward observer for 10th Special Forces Group. That meant I was tasked to go out into the area of operations for a few days before the rest of the team. We’d plan out landing zones, escape routes, everything.
I got my degree from Marshall University, then Suffolk was my first construction job. I found that the leadership I learned in the Army transitioned to the jobsite: how you approach people, how you talk to them, how you have tough conversations. Plus, the amount of first aid and medical experience I learned in the military helps me in my safety role. I’m a big proponent of learning and getting as much education as possible. If you don’t know something, you can’t be afraid to ask.
I appreciate the gratitude that Suffolk has showed toward veterans. People believe in me, and it’s been great to be part of the opportunities here.
