At Suffolk, we’re committed to the holistic integration of sustainable practices within the built environment. Our goal is to partner with our clients, trade partners and others to reimagine the entire building lifecycle and ensure sustainability is incorporated at every stage: from planning, design, and material selection to building operation and energy efficiency after completion. Achieving this ambitious goal requires an all-hands-on-deck approach, consisting of a highly integrative planning and execution process across the entire spectrum of project stakeholders.
We see significant opportunity to go beyond simply improving the efficiency and impact of building methods and operations. We want to adapt, innovate, and disrupt the status quo of what is expected throughout the entire building process.
Solving the puzzle of sustainability in higher education construction
In design, sustainability, and programming, the Boston University Center for Computing & Data Sciences marks the future of construction in higher education. The 19-story, 350,000-square-foot structure is the largest fossil-fuel-free building in Boston, achieved LEED Platinum certification, and incorporates several innovative approaches in design and construction to minimize its environmental impact.

Advancements in aviation
Suffolk is building the new Electric Central Utility Plant (eCUP) at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to provide additional heating and cooling capacity to meet current and future airport demands, and the facility will play a key role in DFW’s goal to be net zero carbon by 2030.

A proprietary concept to build more sustainable data centers
Data centers across the country have embraced sustainability as integral to their business practices, and Yahoo Ad Tech had developed a proprietary concept that could reach one of the lowest power utilization effectiveness (PUE) ratings in the industry. The company turned to Suffolk’s Mission Critical Center of Excellence team to execute the design on its centers in Lockport, N.Y., and Quincy, WA. — and to determine if the concept could scale up to serve larger facilities.

Boston, MAEmerson College Little Building
The LEED Gold-certified, Built Environment Plus award-winng Emerson College Little Building project had a 40% reduction of the project’s embodied carbon through reuse of 66% of the structure and envelope despite 100 years of deterioration.

Boston, MAWinthrop Center
Destined to be the fourth tallest building in Boston, Winthrop Center is also the largest office building in the world to seek Passive House certification, which requires additional efforts to dramatically reduce the amount of energy the building uses.

Los Angeles, CA888 Grand Hope Park
888 Grand Hope Park is a 34-story, high-rise, LEED Silver-certified residential tower in downtown Los Angeles that boasts a 42% reduction in water use, a green roof, and 85 trees on site.

Boston, MA10 World Trade
The first project in Boston to achieve SITES pre-certification from The Sustainable SITES Initiative, this 585,000 square feet of the building will be filled with office and lab space, while an additional 15,000 square feet of adjacent land will be used for the “Triangle Parcel.”
