Suffolk partnered with Affirmed Housing, a California company dedicated to improving and sustaining the state’s viability through the development of affordable housing, to lead construction of Stella and Bluewater in San Diego. These adjacent developments helped address a statewide affordable housing shortage by providing housing for 160 of San Diego’s most vulnerable individuals, families and veterans.
Stella features a mix of 80 permanent supportive housing units for formerly homeless individuals and those with special needs. Stella offers on-site services to residents through its partners, Interfaith Community Services and the VA. Bluewater consists of 80 units for low-income households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income. The units were assigned months in advance to people in need of supportive housing, and the developments were completed in August 2019.
The project has received several honors. The San Diego Housing Federation awarded Stella and Bluewater two Ruby Awards in 2020—one for CSH Supportive Housing, and one for Project of the Year, New Construction—and Affirmed Housing gave the project its Award of Excellence in Partnership.
