Building the future of athletics at Northeastern
Northeastern University Matthews Arena
The new Matthews Arena at Northeastern University replaces the historic venue that has served as a cornerstone of the athletics program since 1929. Originally opened in 1906 and known as the oldest standing ice arena in the United States, the facility has hosted generations of athletes and major events, and the new arena will elevate the experience for student-athletes and fans alike.
Modern facilities honoring a historic legacy

The project includes demolition of the existing structure and construction of a new arena with a hockey rink, basketball facilities, turf fields, and recreation spaces. Building on Suffolk’s previous renovations completed in 2009, the new development is designed to meet current program needs while targeting LEED Gold certification and continuing the legacy of this iconic campus landmark.
